ABB were undertaking a review of the air conditioning specification for various rooms, with requirements ranging from comfort cooling to server room cooling. The client had been told by another air conditioning contractor that to comply with the legislation a complete air conditioning system upgrade was required. Ambient Air Conditioning were brought in and we presented a summary of the legislation and the range of options available. The client decided that the optimum solution was replacement of the air conditioning system.
We replaced the fixed speed R22 air conditioning equipment, which ran at full speed continuously. We changed the system to the new high efficiency inverter equipment, using the R22 replacement refrigerant, R-410A.
This system will drive the compressor less, reducing the energy consumption. Additionally, the technology is optimised with the new refrigerant, so that when does run at full speed it is still more efficient.
Due to the higher efficiency of the new refrigerant, the COP rating has increased from 1 – 2.5 to 1 – 4.

The COP rating of a system relates the energy input to the energy output.
Thus a COP of 1 – 3 means that for every Kw of energy consumed, 3Kw of heating or cooling is delivered.

This client had a server room cooling system operating on R22 refrigerant. It was becoming obsolete and increasingly problematic to maintain. The client had significantly upgraded the IT system over several years and a new, larger capacity server cooling system was required.
A major challenge for this project was the limited power supply which ruled out a new, larger cooling system, if it required more power to run than the old one.
We installed a Hitachi inverter using R-410A, which gave the increase in capacity needed and the reliability of a new system, fully warranty and all parts available. Such an upgrade would normally have required an increase of 25 amps in the power available, however, this system delivers a higher level of cooling with no increase in power usage.

On this site, the office comfort cooling is very important. All year round cooling is required due to the high density of people and equipment. The air conditioning systems were running on R22 refrigerant but client preferred to avoid the heavy disruption of upgrading to a complete new system at this point in time.
We explained the options and the facility management opted for a retrofit, which involved using the existing air conditioning system but removing and destroying the soon to be obsolete R22. We replaced the R22 with an equivalent F Gas compliant drop in alternative to R22. This option allows the client to maintain the operation of the current air conditioning system, enabling them to plan the complex process of the long term indoor and outdoor system upgrade.
