This air conditioning installation presented a number of challenges:

  • Inadequate raised access space beneath the floor for down cooling.
  • Inadequate access space to get the air conditioning equipment into the server  room.
  • The section of the building accommodating the server room was not strong enough to support the external equipment of the air conditioning system.
  • The power supply would not cope with the power spike on start up of the air conditioning system.

The Ambient Air Conditioning solution to these issues:

  • Designed air conditioning equipment specifically to cope with the lack of space beneath the floor. The equipment was designed with sufficient fan power to overcome the resistance of the narrow floor void. This involved building a machine with a larger fan to create more pressure and send the required volume of air through the restricted void at higher speed.
  • The equipment was designed bespoke and was supplied dismantled and rebuilt in the server room.
  • In the design we changed the location of the heaviest elements of the air conditioning equipment, finding and using a space with adequate structural support.
  • Applied ‘soft starts’ to the air conditioning system to reduce the power surge on start up.

The criticality of this air conditioning system is such that it has a 100% run and automatic standby, i.e. we installed two units - one running and one on permanent standby.

VRF For Server Cooling
We specified VRF equipment for this server cooling application. It starts up at 50% of capacity and as further capacity is required, more trips in. This system was selected because the closer the capacity is matched to the load, more consistent the room temperature will be.

Server Room – Cleanroom Environment
In many server room cooling projects, cleanliness considerations are essential. Dust disturbed or created during installation can become trapped in the servers, causing serious operational problems for the IT equipment. We treat server cooling projects as cleanroom environments and use specialist cleaning equipment during installation to minimise the airborne contaminants.

Office Cooling & Heat Recovery - Newcastle

For this office comfort cooling installation we specified a Mitsubishi heat recovery VRF air conditioning system. The heat recovery facility allows any unused or waste heat to be delivered to another part of the building which needs it, a very energy efficient system.

As is quite often the case, when the offices were built no provision had been made for air conditioning plant, so we mounted the system on the roof area, on customised load bearing steel.

Ducted Units – Avoid Office Draughts
The internal air conditioning units are ducted units, connected to swirl diffusers. This is state of the art air conditioning design, to produce maximum air flow and distribution, with minimal noise and draught. In many air conditioned open plan offices, we are aware that staff often complain about draughts during cooling. The use of ducted units allowed us to customise the pattern of the air flow around the office, dealing with this problem.

Office Cooling Middlesbrough

In a complete office renovation, the offices were converted to open plan with the objective of utilising the full range of eco-friendly building services, including low voltage lighting etc. Ambient Air Conditioning were approached to design and install an energy efficient cooling and heating system, avoiding draughts and removing the need for constant re-setting of the system by staff.

We installed a full heat recovery system, using ceiling cassettes to distribute the air to reach sufficient energy levels to achieve approval for Enhanced Capital Allowances. Both the heating & cooling system are connected to a CS network controller. The server room cooling is monitored and controlled remotely by Ambient Air Conditioning.

Air Conditioning Innovation
To eliminate the draughts we employed a system new to the air conditioning industry – a High Off-coil Function. Using this innovation, the temperature of air coming out from the machines is not set as low as normal, reducing the draught factor of the air being introduced around the unit. This system makes use of every degree of cooling achieved, resulting in optimum conditions, with maximum efficiency.
